There’s nothing more Australian than hot sun, warm waves and Cold Chisel. The band’s classic songs like Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Bow River, My Baby, Cheap Wine, Saturday Night and You Got Nothing I Want have become the soundtrack to our summers.

Since their legendary Last Stand way back in 1983, Cold Chisel has reformed for just four national tours, but they almost always played indoors and those gigs didn’t happen over the holidays.

Now, for the first time ever, this legendary Australian band will be playing 14 very special outdoor shows in Australia and New Zealand during summer. Between New Year’s Eve and the second weekend of February, they’ll do gigs on the beach, gigs by the river and gigs in the bush. You’ve never seen anything like it before. You’ll never see anything like it again.

It’s called the Blood Moon Tour 2020 – named after a rare lunar eclipse where the sun, earth and moon all briefly align before returning to their own orbits.

“You might get to see a blood moon once in your life”, explains the band’s main songwriter and piano player, Don Walker. “Apparently there’s going to be one just before dawn when we’re in Melbourne on this tour but we didn’t actually know that when we chose the name. Maybe it’s a sign.”

“We’ve only done four tours since the early 80’s so we need to make each of them count”, explains the band’s frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “We knew that if we were going to get the band back together for another full tour it would have to be something really special. We wanted great line-ups and unusual places so that people would remember these gigs for a long, long time.”

The band has announced that Foodbank will be supported in various ways throughout this tour including by way of special auction items and fundraising collections at each venue on the tour.

“Last year Foodbank provided over 67 million meals to homeless people around Australia”, explains Ian Moss. “They did that by making use of good food and produce that would have gone to waste otherwise. We wish there wasn’t so much demand for their services but we’re pleased to do our bit to help them out.”

Since forming in Adelaide in 1973 and blasting onto the national scene in the late 70s, Cold Chisel has created a uniquely Australian fusion of rockabilly, roughhouse soul, and blues. Between 1978 and 1983 the original line-up of Don Walker, Jim Barnes, Ian Moss (guitar/vocals), Phil Small (bass) and Steve Prestwich (drums) recorded five studio albums that became Australian classics. 1978’s self-titled debut and 1979’s Breakfast At Sweethearts initially received little support from mainstream media but eventually went gold based on nonstop touring. 1980’s East was their huge commercial breakthrough and 1982’s Circus Animals finally saw them top the charts. However by the time Twentieth Century was released in 1984 the band had already flamed out, making their unforgettable Last Stand in arenas around the country. In 1998 Cold Chisel reformed briefly for a chart topping album and tour called The Last Wave Of Summer. An ‘unplugged’ style run of dates called Ringside followed five years later, then in 2011 the group was working on a new studio album that became No Plans when Steve Prestwich sadly died from complications during surgery for a brain tumour. Eventually Charley Drayton agreed to step in to help complete what Steve began and he’s played drums with the band ever since, including on the record breaking Light The Nitro Tour and 2015’s platinum certified The Perfect Crime.

The band is currently putting the finishing touches to some more new music they recorded earlier this year with Charley and they plan to release at least some of it before the Blood Moon Tour. Further announcements will be made about that in the weeks or months ahead.

Over the course of their career, Cold Chisel has sold almost 7 million albums across vinyl, cassette, CD, downloads and streaming. They’ve been inducted to the ARIA Hall Of Fame and received the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music. However their greatest achievements are their songs. It’s a body of work that has defined and echoed who we are. For over 40 years Cold Chisel has defied the odds, ignored the trends, and blazed their own trail. The band has endeared themselves to all sorts of Australians because their uncompromising attitude articulates our hopes, fears, alienation and humour, and because they are simply one of the most ferocious live rock ‘n’ roll outfits on earth.
Fans are reminded to only buy tickets by following the ticket links listed below. People who choose to ignore this clear advice and who instead use search engines like Google to find tickets typically get steered to unofficial reselling sites like Viagogo that often lead to rip-offs.

The Blood Moon Tour 2020 is presented nationally by Triple M and MAX in association with Foodbank.

Cold Chisel Announce Release of their “%*^&ing’ Classic” Live Album Swingshift

unnamed-1

In a week where the band’s newly expanded Best Of moves into the ARIA Top 5, Cold Chisel have announced that their legendary first live album, Swingshift, is finally being re-released on glorious 180g double vinyl. The LP – replete with original gatefold packaging and additional sleeve photos – can be pre-ordered now via www.coldchisel.com and from Friday October 26 it will be available in all good record stores for the first time in decades. This will also be the first time that the 4 additional tracks (“Juliet”, “Never Before”, “Ita” and “Merry-Go-Round”) from the 2011 Collector’s Edition CD have been pressed on vinyl.

Swingshift was Cold Chisel’s first #1 record and is often cited as one of the definitive Australian live albums. The recordings were captured in the winter of 1980 at two iconic venues – Sydney’s Capitol Theatre (supported by INXS and Mental As Anything) and Melbourne’s Palais Theatre (supported by Australian Crawl and Matt Finish) –  as the band wrapped up their triumphant ‘Youth In Asia’ tour. That huge run of dates in support of their breakthrough album East involved 64 shows in 88 days and catapulted Cold Chisel to the biggest band in the land.

Recalling this period in his recent award-winning memoir the band’s frontman, Jimmy Barnes said:

“We were like Stormtroopers marching across Australia. We were on top of the world. The pace we were keeping was blistering. More towns, more girls, more booze, more drugs and all in less time. Longer sets, faster songs and even longer drives.”

“I remember the Sydney show very well,” reflects keyboardist and main songwriter, Don Walker. “It was pretty much the highlight of that tour. By the time we did it we’d played the East album all over the country and this was bringing everything back home.”

A review by RAM Magazine’s Greg Taylor a few days after the Capitol Theatre gig gushed:  “Talk about rare moments of joy with the right crowd. By their own admission and the audience’s this was one of Cold Chisel’s best nights on the current tour. A long set that started way up and miraculously kept on building. Part of it was the skilful addition of outside elements; the guest solo’s from David Blight’s harmonica and Billy Roger’s sax … but the heart of it was the band. Five parts of one incredibly fit musical body, tour hardened and album confident.”

In addition to an already long list of their own classics like “Khe Sanh”, “Breakfast At Sweethearts”, “Choir Girl” and “Cheap Wine”,Swingshift is memorable for the band’s searing covers of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long As I Can See The Light” and the Jesse Stone (via Jerry Lee Lewis) rockabilly gem “Don’t Let Go”, which has gone on to become a staple of Cold Chisel tours ever since.

Critics and fans alike have long hailed Swingshift as a landmark album. Now it is finally being returned to its original vinyl glory (with additional tracks from the same shows).  Jimmy Barnes’ parting words during the album’s closing song really say it all … “fuckin’ classic”.

New, Expanded COLD CHISEL Best Of. On VINYL for first time!

Legendary Australian rock band Cold Chisel have announced they are releasing an expanded and updated version of their best-selling album All For You – The Best Of on Friday September 28.

The Best Of Cold Chisel – All For You – Deluxe Edition will be available across multiple formats, including a great value 37-song Double-CD and digital version for streaming and download platforms. All formats of this expansive release will be released at single-album prices.

And for the first time the album will be released on vinyl, featuring 26 Cold Chisel classics. The vinyl release is a beautiful 180g double-vinyl package with gatefold artwork and coloured inside sleeves.

This expanded release features tracks spanning the band’s 40+ years – from their timeless and anthemic first single Khe Sanh to the well-known Cold Chisel classics Breakfast At Sweethearts, Cheap Wine, Choirgirl, Forever Now, You Got Nothing I Want and Flame Trees. The album also includes recent gems like No Plans and Everybody from the band’s critically-hailed 2012 album No Plans and Long Dark Road and Lost from their chart-topping 2015 album The Perfect Crime. The two albums were recorded after the 2011 release of the original 20-song version of All For You – The Best Of.

When the band compiled the album in 2011 they took the unusual step of asking their fans what songs to include. An incredible 10,000+ votes were received and while it confirmed that their audience obviously loved their best-known songs, there were also some great surprises like the inclusion of Yakuza Girls and the live favourite Shipping Steel. In preparing this new edition the band went back to 2011’s votes and with the expanded double-disc format they are able included the next most voted songs, revealing their fans’ love of the lesser-known nuggets like Janelle, Water Into Wine and Conversations as well epic fan-favourites The Last Wave Of Summer, One Long Day and the powerful and deeply personal Letter To Alan. The biggest surprise however is probably the song The Party’s Over, a bluesy piano-led ballad that only originally appeared as a vinyl single B-side.

The band’s frontman Jimmy Barnes said of The Best Of Cold Chisel – All For You – Deluxe Edition. “This now becomes our definitive and only Best Of collection. It’s great that it includes some of our more obscure songs, songs that we love just as much as our famous recordings. There are songs here written by each band member, songs that were big hits and a couple that have never been played on radio, but they’re loved by our fans. Cold Chisel has always been a strange brew of genres, sounds and personalities – this album captures that.”

“Cold Chisel has recorded eight studio albums,” says piano player and primary songwriter Don Walker. “Two of those albums were recorded after we released the 2011 Best Of.  Some of our favourites songs are on these recent records, so it was time to bring this collection up to date.”

The Best Of Cold Chisel – All For You – Deluxe Edition is released on the band’s own label via Universal Music on Friday September 28 and is available for pre-order on all good stores HERE
